In 1968 Fred and Connie Wert had a dream, a dream to own and operate their own family restaurant. Connie Haines Wert grew up watching her parents be successful owners and operators of the historic Village Inn. She knew what it took to run a successful restaurant. Fred also knew what it took to run a restaurant because he bartended at the Village Inn for years. On July 29th, 1968 Fred and Connie’s dream came true. On that day Wert’s Café opened their doors for the first time.
In Wert’s humble beginnings, there were only twelve tables and nine employees. Fred was the bartender and Connie cooked in the morning and waitressed for lunch and dinner. During this time, the Wert’s were also raising a family of three…sons Greg and Phil and daughter Kathy. Through the years there have been many changes at Wert’s including the addition of a second dining room and waiting area. Also, Wert’s now has 25 tables and its staff is 36 people strong, including all three children who are now grown with children of their own. However, some things have remained the same. Wert’s still serves up great food and gives friendly service in a warm family atmosphere that will keep you coming back time and time again.
